To meet growing demand, Providence chose Mahlum to design a Pediatric Emergency Department that adds 18 new exam rooms, separate waiting rooms for adults and children, a Kid’s Club space, and cafe. In addition, the entry is designed to serve multiple hospital departments. The building itself, clad in ‘emergency red’ for maximum visibility, serves as a critical wayfinding tool within a complex medical campus. The central team work area supports collaboration by providing large, open, and flexible seating. Glass screens enclose the area to reduce distractions while allowing clear visibility to all treatment rooms. Playful graphics enliven treatment areas to create an uplifting atmosphere. The Kid’s Club at the second level serves to provide a safe and welcoming environment for children whose family members are being treated, with views out to a healing garden.
“It’s almost too successful … Patients and visitors from all over the complex come here to relax and escape the normal stress of a hospital stay.”
