The new 152,000 SF Kellogg Middle School is designed to address the specific academic, social, and emotional needs of the teenage learner. Internal and external transparency throughout the school creates an open, welcoming, and safe learning environment that inspires curiosity.
Through a collaborative design process, Mahlum helped the District transition 6th graders to middle school by creating a welcoming environment that addresses their unique needs and adapts to evolving learning priorities.
Internal and external transparency throughout Kellogg Middle School creates an open, welcoming, and safe learning environment. Conceptually, the site is divided into a secure middle school “backyard” to the north and a public, open “front yard” to the south. A central, secure learning courtyard provides ample opportunities for students to take short cuts to their next class and connect with nature.
Kellogg is home to the nation’s first acoustic DLT system installation, utilizing the wood panels for structure, finish, and acoustical control all at the same time. The beauty and warmth of exposed mass timber is used where it has the greatest impact, such as the library and commons. The wood ceiling brings warmth, acoustical comfort within the school’s largest spaces.
